Alternative rehabilitation for those who need it most.

Zygomatic implants are a game-changer in oral rehabilitation and are used to deliver outstanding support for a full-arch prosthesis where conventional implants cannot. They provide hope for severely compromised patients who would otherwise be told they aren’t eligible for dental implant treatment.

Popular for over two decades, zygomatic implants are tried, tested and proven solutions to treat edentulous patients (those who are missing all their teeth) facing severe bone loss.

What are zygomatic tooth implants?

Zygomatic dental implants are considerably longer than conventional implants and are designed to anchor into the dense zygomatic (cheek) as opposed to the jaw. They are used alongside conventional implant appliances in full-arch cases to provide that much-needed support.

Compared to conventional dental implants, zygomatic implants offer equally effective support and can be placed and immediately loaded with a restoration arch in just one day.

Because the zygomatic (cheek) bone does not diminish after tooth loss, it provides the ideal anchor point because, once in position, movement will not occur.

How do zygomatic implants work?

Because zygomatic implants are extra-long, they are placed through the upper jaw into the maxillary sinus and the cheekbone, where quality bone is plentiful. The zygoma provides a stable anchor point to support a lifelike full-arch restoration.

Once the zygomatic implants are in position, 4 to 6 conventional implants are placed, which collectively are strong enough to secure a beautifully crafted full-arch denture that provides excellent functionality and aesthetics.

The advantages of zygomatic implants for full arch rehabilitation

There are numerous benefits of zygomatic implants for patients, including:

  • No need for bone grafting – Because the cheekbone does not diminish, zygomatic implants negate the need to augment bone.
  • Giving hope to orally compromised patients – Zygomatic implants are ideal for those severely atrophied patients who may have been told that it wasn’t possible to undergo implant rehabilitation.
  • No more uncomfortable dentures – Being able to rehabilitate patients will fix full-arch restorations, which means patients can say goodbye to problematic dentures.
  • Long-lasting results – Just like their counterparts, zygomatic implants are designed to last for many years with proper care.

Who is suitable for zygomatic implant treatment?

Bone loss is a natural process as we age, so zygomatic implant treatment tends to be more popular among elderly patients. That said, this isn’t always the case.

If bone loss is exacerbated through the following, you may be a good candidate for All-On-4 or All-On-6 treatment using zygomatic implants:

  • Failure to replace missing teeth.
  • Periodontal disease.
  • Microbial infections that damage the jaw bone.
  • Misaligned teeth.

What’s zygomatic implant treatment really like?

First, let me assure you that as an advanced implant dentist, you’re in safe and trusted hands.

I will conduct a full mouth assessment during an initial consultation to determine the best course of action. I’ll also take the time to explain the process and answer any questions or concerns you may have. If you’re a nervous or anxious patient, I’ll take that into account, too.

The surgical part of the treatment is minimally invasive, comfortable and relatively quick because most of the planning is done beforehand using high-tech scanning and state-of-the-art digital imaging. Typically, patients are administered a local anaesthetic, but in some cases, it’s possible to utilise the latest conscious sedation techniques to ensure nervous patients remain relaxed.

After treatment, I’ll tell you exactly what’s been done and how to care for your smile over the coming weeks. Slight swelling and discomfort are typically expected. However, they can normally be controlled using a combination of hot and cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relief.

After 7-14 days, you should be able to carry on as normal.

Are you ready to change your life?

Imagine being able to talk, eat and speak with confidence after being told you weren’t eligible for implant treatment. That’s how zygomatic implants can help!

They allow you to undergo restorative full-arch treatment that can enhance your quality of life beyond belief.

FAQs

Is full-arch rehabilitation with a zygomatic implant really carried out in just one day?

It’s true that in a single day, you will be fitted with a functioning set of fixed teeth. In addition to this, however, you should expect a series of pre-op and post-op review appointments. You will also be called back one final time to fit your permanent restoration bridge.

How durable are zygomatic implants?

I only invest in quality implants, and this, coupled with the insertion of longer implants into the dense cheekbone, provides maximum support, making zygomatic implants exceptionally durable.

When are zygomatic implants indicated in patients?

Zygomatic implants are preferred in patients with little or no bone support in the upper arch. Also, patients who have failed conventional implant rehabilitation due to a health or medical condition, or indeed, those who must avoid augmentative treatments like bone grafting, are also good candidates for zygomatic implant placement.

What are the success rates of zygomatic implants?

Zygomatic dental implants are arguably even more successful than conventional implants because they are not exposed to the atrophic bone like traditional implants. In some studies, Parel et al reported a 100% success rate after a six-year follow-up, as did Bedrossian after a 34-month follow-up.
